Making sense of the activity within a nascent market is inherently difficult. Today, we are excited to announce the launch of a new data initiative with the goal of improving CDR market data transparency and encourage a better overall understanding of the carbon removal space.

The Challenge(s)

Given the immaturity of the permanent CDR market, many available datasets are incomplete. Perhaps more importantly, some core data points (e.g. specific price points or available removal supply) are missing altogether. The publicly available data can sometimes be inconsistent too and this can lead to further confusion or mixed messages. We believe clarifying, cleaning, and transparently publishing this information (as best we can), while also adding helpful context (make sure to click on “view notes” for certain graphs), can truly help the CDR space and relevant stakeholders.

How are we doing this?
For context, our work consists of helping companies by de-risking the procurement of strictly high-quality, permanent carbon removal credits, which means we consequently sit at the intersection of several ecosystems (Buyers, suppliers, public/private financing, energy partners, etc.). With the growth of our operations, we’ve started to not only gather more data but have also seen the value in aggregating certain datasets for the purposes of promoting data transparency and therefore overall ecosystem health. Today, the majority of the data we are publishing, in aggregate, comes from interacting with projects directly, as well as our own direct project-level research (As of this writing, we cover 106 projects across all removal pathways). This is all then complemented by 3rd party sources, such as marketplaces, registries, directories, and news articles.

The approach & ongoing effort
At the time of this writing, we have published 15+ graphs across 5 overall information categories, which includes sections on geographical CDR activity, project development information, CDR pricing & cost data, among others.

Our goal is to continually update the existing information as often as possible, add new information as the datasets become more complete, and over time, expand the overall information categories to broaden the covered scopes. We certainly don’t see this as a “one and done” initiative, we’ve embarked on somewhat of a long journey here and many datasets will actually only make sense and provide value over time (e.g. price movements per pathway in 2023, 2024, 2025, and so on). In any case, we will try our best to communicate when the data was last updated and certainly when we push new information.

How you can help
First, we would love to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to data [at] with comments, questions, and/or feedback. We’re open to collaborating also if you think there’s something to explore there. And lastly, we’ll never be upset if you decide to share the data or information above (or any specific graphs/datasets from the data pages!) within your circles of influence!
